The ongoing fight against ballot initiatives

Florida legislative leaders hate it — just hate it! — when a majority of voters pass constitutional initiatives that didn't come from the Legislature. And Florida voters keep passing things like medical marijuana legalization, term limits, class-size limits and a ban on gerrymandering. This year sees a proposed constitutional amendment to make the supermajority requirement even more super (SB 950, HJR 177) — from 60% of the vote to 66.7% — and to narrowly limit proposed amendments to "matters relating to procedural subjects or to the structure of the government or of this constitution." (SJR 1412, HB 1127)
