Commission Seeks to Guide Medical Marijuana Implementation in Florida

By Matthew Peddie, 90.7 WMFE News, Orlando - A commission created to help guide the implementation of medical marijuana law in Florida will meet for the first time this week. Florida for Care says it wants to create a gold standard for medical marijuana in the state.

Unlike United for Care- which is advocating for the legalization of medical marijuana, Florida for Care says it isn’t taking sides on whether amendment 2 should pass in November.

But the group’s executive director Dan Rogers, who’s based in Orlando, says the state still has to prepare.

“I think everyone involved with the commission agrees that should it pass we want to make sure we have a system in place to implement it properly, says Rogers.

"We don’t want to do this haphazard.”

Rogers says the commission includes experts from law enforcement, agriculture, business leaders and health advocates- and not everyone supports the passage of amendment 2.

He says they will craft a plan for how to make medical marijuana available to Floridians, focusing on criminal justice, health policy and business regulation.

The group will hold the first of five internal meetings Thursday, and aims to have a draft ready to show the public in September.
